An Overview of Addiction Treatment
The Freedom Center is a Maryland addiction treatment facility offering outpatient rehab to clients from areas throughout the state and area, including from Cumberland.
Rehab doesn’t require participants to stay overnight in a facility or leave their home or daily life.
There are two main situations where someone might participate in outpatient rehab. In the first scenario, they might do an outpatient rehab program on its own, especially if their addiction to drugs or alcohol is fairly mild or short-term.
The other situation would integrate outpatient rehab as part of a continuum of care. For many people who struggle with the disease of addiction, treatment is ongoing and long-term. They might begin with a medical detox program, then do an inpatient rehab. Following that inpatient treatment, the recommendation might be that they move into a lower level of care, such as outpatient rehab.

The Benefits of Professional Treatment
There are certain benefits and advantages to outpatient treatment, whether it’s the first step in someone’s treatment journey or they’ve already completed a higher-level treatment program. Advantages of outpatient rehab include:
- There is significant flexibility in terms of scheduling with an outpatient rehab program
- You don’t have to leave your home or family, which is particularly beneficial if you have a supportive home environment—that sense of support can be critical to successful treatment outcomes
- Outpatient rehab is less expensive than many other forms of treatment
- You don’t have to leave school, work or other commitments to participate in outpatient treatment
Different Types of Treatment for Substance Abuse
All outpatient rehab programs have one thing in common—participants don’t stay overnight in treatment. Beyond that, there are often quite a few differences between outpatient rehab programs, especially in terms of intensity. Outpatient substance abuse treatment can range from very intensive to fairly informal and low intensity.
The following are some of the different types of outpatient treatment that are available:
Day Treatment
Day treatment is also called partial hospitalization, and it’s the most intensive of all outpatient programs. Most elements of a day treatment program are more similar to inpatient rehab than outpatient rehab. However, patients do return home or to a sober living house in the evenings.
Day treatment is very structured and scheduled, and there isn’t a lot of room for flexibility with this type of outpatient rehab.
Typically participants are expected to arrive at the treatment facility each morning and go through therapy and other scheduled treatment throughout the day. Then, in the late afternoon, they can go home for the evening.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
An intensive outpatient program or IOP usually includes group therapy which takes place several days a week. This group therapy does occur within the framework of an individualized treatment plan. During an IOP, participants can continue their daily lives as normal. If they’re participating in an IOP as a transition after inpatient rehab, they can resume their daily lives.
Most intensive outpatient programs do offer flexibility, and holistic care to address not only substance abuse but other areas of concern for the patient, such as mental health care.
Continuing Care
Staying sober is a long-term process for most people. As part of that, many people will do some form of continuing care well after they complete inpatient or outpatient rehab. This could mean they do individual therapy with a counselor or participate in a support and recovery group like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.
Who Is a Good Fit for Rehab?
The following are some groups of people that might be a good fit for a Maryland outpatient rehab program:
- Someone recommended to outpatient rehab by a clinician or following a medical assessment
- A person not requiring the intensity of a medical detox or inpatient rehab
- Someone who’s already completed inpatient rehab
- An individual who can’t go to inpatient rehab because of other commitments, but still needs addiction treatment
